Founded in 1891 as a rail siding for the Arizona Eastern Railway, the large town of Gilbert, Arizona is located in Maricopa County. The town of Gilbert was named after the property owner, William "Bobby" Gilbert. In the early 1900's the town of Gilbert was known as the Hay Capital of the World. Though it has a population of more than 200,000, Gilbert is still incorporated as a town rather than a city. The quiet town of Gilbert is considered family friendly by its residents and visitor, but has several shops and restaurants to entice visitors. The warm and sunny year round weather in Gilbert and its close proximity to Phoenix, make Gilbert a great place for a golf weekend getaway with its handful of scenic courses including Western Skies Golf Club and Kokopelli Golf club. The town of Gilbert, Arizona has two international sister cities; Newtownabbey in Northern Ireland and Leshan, Sichuan, China.
