Tempe is located near the center of Arizona. Tempe is part of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. Tempe has some of the best public transportation in the state. Serviced by the Valley Metro bus line and the METRO lite rail, you can get to or from any of the other cities in the valley with ease. Tempe also boasts a free shuttle service called Orbit that provides commuters and residents with access throughout the city. The official population is 175,000 when university is in session the population swells to about 225,000 due to the presence of Arizona State University. ASU is one of the top 5 public universities when measured by population. With such a large collegiate presence, Tempe has no shortage of coffee houses and bars. The nightlife is quite active all year round. If you want to dance, you can find techno, hip-hop, jazz or country clubs with ease. Your dining options are quite vast, from fast food to fine dining. Mill Avenue is packed with specialty shops and is the site of the Tempe New Years Celebration. Mill Avenue is closed to vehicles and and a street party featuring live music by rings in the new year in a truly festive environment.
